We end this week with an interesting online sales statistic reported by Digital Commerce 360 (previously Internet Retailer). In 2017 $453.46 billion was spent online in the United States alone. That number represents a 17% increase in online spending over 2016 and clearly supports the continuation of two already well-established trends:
1. Brick-and-mortar store sales are decreasing at a faster pace than ever before.
2. Consumer behavior is largely shifting from shopping online as a convenience to a necessity.
What do these two trends mean for the affiliate channel? To start, high-value advertising that is inline with content and doesn’t forcefully interrupt a browser’s experience online is becoming more valuable as well as scarce. Google’s latest ad blocking update to the Chrome browser is a clear indication of this.
As the collective consumer attitude shift towards online shopping as a necessity continues, the affiliate channel will take an increasingly more important role for brands looking to capitalize on that growth through high-value advertising.
